for those who may have both, or even an opinion, which one and why please? I know these are both supposed to be a nice piece of kit but I am wondering if there is advantages to one over the other, build quality etc.

I am looking for a small reliable VW mod. Not in to TC atm so not too concerned there. Likely not for more than 45W so no problem there either.

    TIA for any help.

I vote for the VTC mini. The TC is iffy with some materials but sine you won't be using it, that doesn't matter. The screen is much better and shows a lot more info. Firmware upgrades come regularly and much easier menu system. I have never cared for the menu system on the YiHi chipsets.

I've got the D2, which is about the same size as the D3. Never tried TC mode but in normal power mode, it's a nice small mod that just works. I believe it's smaller than the VTC Mini and the screen shows power & resistance readings & battery indicator clearly. I don't need any more info than that. YMMV

Maybe I just hate the YiHi menu system so bad that I'm prejudiced against all YiHi devices. Personal preference only but I find it more awkward than any other menu system I've ever used. I guess it's fine once you get used to it. What about firmware on the D2 and D3, do they update them as needed?

Good points as I have no intention of using TC. Just saw the Evic VTwo on Mickys thread. Looks nice for the price I think.

The D3 is not firmware upgradable. It has no USB port at all. Therefore it has a round charging plug which many don't like. I don't mind.

Since firmware version 3 the eVic Mini works well for me in any mode including TC. I won't elaborate on TC since you won't be using it. Just saying it has more functions and is more versatile, the screen is class leading with richer information. There are changeable user logos and other firmware user customisation out there on the net. I am not using that. On the other hand it is a little lesser well crafted than the D3. The 510 on the D3 seems better, it has better paint and so it seems the sturdier buttons.

The D3 feels better in the hand because of the smoother and thicker paint, and because of it's shape. But both are ok and also size-wise not far apart. A choice in between more functions and better crafting I believe.

@peter-k and @Siam Diesel thank to both of you. very useful for me.

I have tried TC before PeterK but found I really only like the new DNA boards for that and I have had a bad reliability problem with three of them a while ago and so have stopped using TC

I do have the RX200 and it is nice I must say. TC on this was ok but not the best. Mickys page says it has a new chipset, but I can't find any info about what real changes it has made to performance, if any, rather than menu and functions. having said that it is still tempting. lol

But really I am still going to be looking for something more pocket friendly with the concerns about usage outside and the BiB.

Very nice find @Siam Diesel. It appears they are so close that it may come down to aesthetics.

I love the screen on the VTC Mini, but don't like the sound of the 510 connection.

Looks I think I prefer the D3 BUT the screen is small, going blind in my old age, and not sure about a too firm fire button.

Maybe I will get both. LMAO

Have never been in the D2 menu system...just use the 2 buttons to increase/decrease the wattage. My g/f uses it almost exclusively...she loves the small size and it comes with a silicone sleeve to protect the finish.

As @peter-k noted, there's no USB port so no firmware updates to mess with. ;)

The screen on the VTC Mini is better, no question. But since you'd only be setting the power, the D3 screen is probably good enough...and it's a more pocketable mod IMO.

Get 'em both...sell the one you don't like on the forum!
