Dry burn with Russian 91% ^Help^

Ok guys, I took the step forward and got myself a Russian 91%.

Started my first build following RIP Trippers. I am using a 32ga Kanthal A1, did 6 wraps around a 1.4mm screwdriver and I bought some cotton balls from 7/11 (not boiled).

I really did my best, followed step by step. It reads 1.3ohms and I am fine with that.

I set the Hana at 15watts, checked that everything was firing and... HORRIBLE TASTE. Burned plasric taste..

I uninstalled everything, checked the coil and the cotton, the wick is far from dry.

After 20min and no improvement, I rebuikd a coil, made a new cotton wick (not too tight), made sure the cheminy are not blocked by the cotton...

Same. Simply cannot vape it. Funny enough, i build it with my brother in law through Skype. He has a Kayfun Lite Plus and he is using silica. First build for him as well. Same horrible taste.

Guys, I have wasted more than 5ml of juice by opening the Russian x times, I am now clueless.

Your help would be more than appreciate

 

well since none of the real experts wrote a reply so far .... those are just some guesses... cause i dont see anything you did toooo wrong

start out with 7 Watts and put it up higher when needed,
- 15 watts is quite a lot already, so maybe wise to start out lower and then climbing slowly

use a bigger drillbit / diameter for your coil
- it could be the the juice flow interrups, and therefore the burned taste

use less cotton
- the left and right overlaps of cotton shouldnt be too much imho, take care that the cotton doesnt reach the upper deck otherwise you ll get a gurgling leaking issue

dont be afraid
- my first coils looked far worse then this, so hang in there

Something is amiss so would consider doing a completely different build type. Here's a link to a vid that I followed a ways back and it worked pretty well for me. I do things a bit different now but it was pretty solid some time ago. Kayfun Lite Organic Cotton and Micro Coil Build - YouTube

I think that is good advice to start with lower watts. 6 wraps of 32g wire will heat really fast, so maybe the 15 watts was too much for it.

 

Yeah 32 ga to get to 1.3 with 6 wraps 1.4 mm....that's pretty darn small. I like 2.0mm to about 2.4 depending and find 32g too thin. Good suggests Oil!

 

yeah Oil is on the money ... follow all his advice ... 2mm minimum for a first build

 

It was indeed hearing reaaaally fast but I thought it just how that is supposed to be.

I just finished a new one, using almost 2mm screwdriver, same kanthal, 6 wraps, the Hana is ready it at 1.7ohms.

I set it up at 9 watts and... NO BURN TASTE !!!





Ok that is good BUT i am a bit disapointed then. The flavor is good but not so different than I would have expected. Also, how many watts can I out to really see what the Russian can do ? On this setting, my aerotank mega was giving me as much vapor.

Anyway, it is working. Oil, Scratchy (going to watch your vid now), Smithereens and BudSamui, MEGA BIG THANKS to you guys.

I need to learn more about the size of coil i can build with what size of kanthal.

 

with less cotton i was more reffering to the overlaps, left and right to the coil, 1.5 cm on both sites is more then enough imho
the reason i said this more of less cause if the cotton touched the upper deck you will most likely getting issues with leaking and gurgling, cause the cotton lifts the juice to the airflow deck where it can then leak out .... i just was trying to save you more juice loss

imho, you can fire it slowly up till you get the burnt taste again and then just lower it to the Watts you liked

its depending on your coils / the wraps, for the Atty the Russian its pretty much unlimited and skies are the limit

the new Aerotanks / Nautilus / Delta Tanks .... are actually really good and the close the gap between the RBA sand the old Clearotanks a lot, so i would say the difference is minor, if you compare it to any of those devices

 

Really glad to hear Oil's advice was of good help and you are in a much better place than before. That's great!

One thing to keep in mind too about the Russian and other Kayfun type devices is that they are better regarded for flavor and not for producing thick and copious amounts of vapor....you can probably get them to do more of the vapor with different types of builds, modifying your air intake and lowering ohm's etc. I read numerous times from good sources on the Web that the sweet spot for these seem to be from 1.2 up to about 2.0 ohms. I personally haven't really done anything different than that range so can't speak too well about otherwise.

I have an aerotank mega also and while I like the vape it gives and the convenience factor, all my Kayfun type devices produce a better vape for my taste. Thinking back though, my first builds on kayfuns were pretty crappy and probably not better than the aerotank mega so I guess with practice I improved things a lot and suspect you will too.

Oh and do check out Ryanmcl's video too...it really is very good.

I checked the one you posted, his build, especially on the leads is easier to install, will definitively do this way next time.

But I don't understand, how can I lower my ohms using the same equipment ? Less wrap or smaller diameter on the screwdriver ?

Your current build looks good - congrats on your success. I know it's a good feeling.

You can lower the ohms by using thicker wire. Your hana is powerful, so you can use bigger wire with more wraps (9 wraps of 28 gauge for example). That would give your coil quite a lot more surface area which should give you more vapour. It wouldn't lower the ohms much, but your hana mod is a regulated device, so you don't really need to lower the ohms to improve your vape. You can just put a bigger coil and up the watts instead.

 

What a great explaination. See I misunderstood, I thought a 28ga will be thinner and therefore more weak. I was then wondering if 11watts with a 32ga is the limit before dry burns, how can people vaoe at 30watts sub ohms !

I got everything wrong, I feel a bit ashamed but in the same timw it is good to feel that I am learning and so much to look forward.
