For those who "roll your own" . . . coils, that is. What diameter do you prefer? Why do you prefer that diameter?

I have used the little screwdrivers that come with RDAs and don't really like them. Toothpicks aren't bad, but there is little consistency in diameter. Today I scored some steel dowels, 2.0 mm in diameter and long enough to comfortably hold. I am hoping the slight increase in diameter (about 0.5 mm) isn't going to make my coils too cool.

I make coils once in a blue moon, if I feel like putting a new fresh coil in the Queen or three KayFuns...I take a small screwdriver, a thicker one than you get free with the attys and make a coil...

I really have no clue, but think some are around 2 mm and others are 3 mm.

You use those little ones that come with the RDAs? They are about 1.4 mm.

Found 2.5 mm with 28 AWG kanthal 6 wraps dual coil working just fine on the mutation X RDA.35 watts gives "clouds bro" and a nice warm Vape. Wicking with cotton i like a somewhat bigger diameter to insert the cotton easier but at the same time i found the wicking is better and the coils get more juice.

Does a 2.0 mm diameter use a lot of wicking material?
    **Updated**
I'm thinking 2.0 mm 26 gauge 6 wraps in the same RDA.

No mate. 2mm is the smallest I have ever used I think. I use 3 or 3.5mm, can't remember which, in one of my Erlkonigins

I use 2mm mostly. Goes up to 2.5mm now and then, and has tried a few builds with 3mm. But that’s a little to wide for me. And it's mostly 28 and 26 AWG I use.

28 gauge my favorite size for coil building as its not too big for the small screws

    • 1.4mm 9 rounds dual coils for my rdas , this diameter tends to burnt out the wicks fast therefore i would use on a dripper where i can always monitor the saturation of the wicks
    • 2mm 8 rounds for my russian , with the bigger air flow the coils is cooler compare to my kayfun
    • 2.4mm 7 rounds for kayfun , suitable for most of the different juices i vape, wont get chunky as fast as a smaller diameter
