Surely, all of you have been left wondering over many a sleepless night: "what ever happened to Darth's quest to find a rotary tool in Thailand that does not suck king kong donkey balls?"... Well, here it is, the conclusion.

    PROXXON

A bit more expensive than what you might want to pay but if you add up the costs of the disposable dremels you will surely piss up a flagpole, this is priced right. It out classes the dremel in every respect except if you count relying on a trusted brand name to peddle mexican made sub par crap as a category in your evaluation. It fails at that. Fine German precision craftsmanship this is. The best part is it doesn't sh!t itself within weeks of your light use of the thing. Twice. Just beyond that the noise it produces might be over half that of the dremel and probably a tenth of the black and decker (which was not bad considering its cost plus the fact its demise was not by it being of piss poor manufacturing but due to temporary operator retardation.. See previous posts re: rotary tools - alas, in Thai "no have")

The above link is a product pdf from the manufacturer but you can take all the claims as true by endorsement here.

The Proxxon was purchased in the fair city of Bangkok from the following reseller:

    TPS MACHINE TOOL CO, LTD

at their location on Yaowarat Road in Chinatown. Website is in Thai but there's google for what sort of works out to be a semi-intelligible translation with the chrome browser... The man at the shop spoke english well and did not scoff at replies in eager to practice Thai. Prices there were "standard" which is high compared to outside the kingdom but that is to be expected. As far as it could be told, there were no other better prices advertised at a brick and mortar but the search was only so obsessive and extensive until this joint was settled on... If anyone finds another hardware retailer with similar items please pipe up as they are hard to ferret out when your language skills are still inferior to those of a five year old.

It has been a couple of months since the tool was purchased. Held off on a mention in case it fell flat after some use. At this point, it is a safe bet to put money down on Proxxon. Cheers, y'all.

    Peace out!

Thanks for this. I got a Dremel that actually has been working okay, but only for very light use. A useful tool that I have missed.

what model number? it was the 2nd 3000 that failed in the same way as the first, both times just weeks into using it and also both while under a very light load, when the reality smacked right up against all the presumption made up to that point: bad luck was not involved the first time around. The first one was not a dud, it was a defect. It was hard to pull the trigger on buying the same brand and model to replace the one you just had, while it was still under warranty but not properly honored (long story there, see past post, search dremel). But given the other options round here, it was still better than spending even more on still useless extra features (4000 series and a handful of plastic accessories, etc ) or less on something really sketchy or shoddy. So it was decided that the first failed device must have been a fluke and to just get over it. The reasoning being, after all it is a DREMEL, right? Survey says...
