How many wraps?

So I will be getting my new Kayfun in a couple of days and I want to know what my starting point, with number of wraps, should be if I'm trying to get a resistance of between 1.6 and 2.5 ohms? I understand doing more wraps than is needed and then unwrapping until I get the desired results, but I don't want to do 20 wraps as a starting point if 10 will be closer.

    Kanthal A1 Wire 0.3mm (28 AWG)
    Silica Wick 2.0mm

Also, should I assume that the resistance is determined by how much wire is between the screw mounts and any excess hanging off is not relevant?

Instead of clogging up the forum with another post ,maybe you should check todays posts there you will find a coil caculator .Steam Coils Calculator

8-10 wraps should be an excellent starting point

OK...just to be clear. When testing to see if I have enough wraps, the excess should be removed first? That kind of makes it a little difficult to reattach if I need to back out one wrap. :)

Here's another online coil calculator (this one is my fav):
Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators

I've never needed to unwind a wrap from a coil. If you do that, put your coil back onto whatever your wrapped it with (drill bit, screwdriver, etc.) and hold the coil firmly between your fingers while unwrapping. This will help to prevent the coil from getting warped or stretched in the process.

I second what debatedude mentioned: 8-10 wraps would be ideal. 9 wraps of 28 AWG (2mm diameter) usually comes out around 1.5 ohms. That's what I have on my kayfun now and it fires nicely on my vision spinner, which probably has a similar output to what you're using. Higher ohm coils will need more wraps, and if you don't have a strong battery you may find that too many wraps of 28AWG will take too long to heat up. For example, a 2.5 ohm coil would need 16 wraps - that will take a while to heat up.

If you watched Ryan's video on kayfun builds, you would've seen he does an "iteo" wicking method at the end. That wicking method has been performing really well for me too. Definitely recommended.

    AH! Very good!

Now....I'm making the assumption that the inner diameter of the coil will be about 4mm, as I'm using 2 strands of 2mm silica. Is that correct?

Can you post a link to Ryan's video? I don't think I've seen that one.

My guess is no, as it would only be 4mm on 1 side and 2 mm on the other side, again iam guessing but i think to get a 4mm 4pieces of 2mm is needed.:vaping:

but you relly dont want it to be 4 mm, its too much.

why is it you dont want to use cotton ?

So how do I determine what the inner coil diameter is?

    Silica first...cotton later...baby steps :)

4mm is seriously huge. I never gone anywhere near that - not so sure it's gonna work out. Either way, use the coil calculators to set your diameter, wire gauge, etc. and it will tell you how many wraps you need to achieve your desired ohms.

Using silica - again something I haven't done since my very first coil. Not sure how that's gonna work out with 28 AWG. Hopefully someone with silica experience will chime in.

Personally, I think the cotton would be easier to start with than silica. Because with cotton you can wrap your coil, then insert the wick later. This would allow you to make the coil exactly to spec. Hmmm.. maybe threading the silica later is possible though - I'm not sure if it's a pita or not.

haha but cotton is alot easyer to work with than silica, i try silica in my kayfun, used 3 mm, it works but wasnt great, i think it will be around 3 mm if you use 2*2mm but not sure, the thing with silica is that you need to wrap the coil direct on the silica as its not easy to put in a premade coil.
