1. Welcome to Thailand Vapers, an English language forum for members in Thailand and the rest of Asia to talk about vaping.
Commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, vaping is really about the use of personal vaporizers (mods) and atomizers (tanks, clearos, RBAs, RDAs, RTAs) filled with e-liquid.

Battery disposal?

Just wondering where people dispose of batteries here? I am assuming we don't just chuck them in the bin but wouldn't be surprised if that is in fact the procedure ;)

Had an incident with a battery VTC5 last night, nothing exciting but as it's not just me who lives here (I live with my 7yo daughter) I want to err on the side of caution and get rid. 300B is a small price for piece of mind.

As for the incident, going to bed last night I took the battery out of my Nemesis and put it into the charger just to see what voltage it was carrying, it was 4.02v. When I pulled it out I noticed some discolouration at the positive end. With further examination and a bit of prodding and poking I noticed some liquid (tiny amounts) would appear when pushing on the top part of the shrink wrapper. Not knowing if the battery was leaking or it was just juice I marked it with a pen and placed it in the bathroom.

I then jumped on the computer for the next 30 minutes investigating without finding anything conclusive. "Heat discolouration" kept cropping up but the liquid I noticed kind of ruled that out for me. The amounts of liquid were so tiny when rubbed onto a tissue it was difficult to get an accurate smell and a couple of things that had happened previously were possibly clouding my judgement.

Earlier in the day when opening the fridge the battery slipped out of the mod tube onto the floor from about chest height, which could of possibly damaged the battery.
There was no juice on the 510 connector to the Taifun but when I unscrewed the centre pin a bit came out. It smelt of the previous juice I used but had the colour of the juice I was currently using, the same colour that was left on the tissue after wiping the battery top. Hmm, prior to that I had removed the draw tube and it's insulator to experiment with airflow. Maybe the extra diameter had enabled juice to spit from the wicks and seep down finding its way into the 510 connection?

On returning to the bathroom the discolouration had doubled in size and I noticed two tiny slits in the shrink wrapper at the positive end of the battery. I placed it in the charger again which read the same 4.02v. I placed it back in the bathroom positive side down and went to bed.

You can see a tiny slit at the very top edge of the battery and another slightly below and to the right

When I woke up this morning the battery was completely discoloured but nothing had leaked from the bottom. I just pulled the shrink wrapper off and could see no physical damage to the battery apart from a light residue that resembled rust on positive edge. I put it in an atomizer box and gave it to the binman who promptly chucked in the back of his truck.

The mod hand been in my hand or within a few inches of me the entire evening. No heat, hissing sounds or strange odours were noticed.

    TL:DR
Unsure of my batteries safety. Where can i dispose of batteries safely in Thailand?

I'd bet you 1000 baht that it's just e-liquid, lithium batteries have very little liquid electrolyte in them and it reacts to water, so the bad things would have happened already just from the humidity in the air. I've responded to several lithium battery fires as a firefighter, if you really want to be safe just put the battery in a plastic bag full of baking soda. I think all my VTC4's have some amount of juice in them at this point, they all look like the one in your photo.

The only place I can recommend is Mega Bangna, they have battery trash cans all over the mall, but I've seen the cleaners just dump all the bins into one big bag so I don't bother bringing anything there myself.

In Pattaya, on the bottom floor of Tuk Com, there's a big DIY store that has a battery section to the left in an alcove as you enter the store. I've given them my old batteries before...

You're probably right. Pulling out the draw tube on my Taifun probably allowed a tiny amount of liquid to spit into there and slowly seep into the 510. There was no gurgling or visible liquid on the 510 connection but when I pulled the pin out it smelled of the previous juice I had had in the tank but had the colour of the present juice. There was at least a drop in there.
The dropping of the battery earlier, combined with the two tiny slits in the shrink wrap and the speed in which it spread had me slightly concerned as there was very little liquid oozing out from under the shrink wrap when squeezed but the discolouration was spreading steadily. When I woke up this morning and saw it fully discoloured after turning the battery upside down I just had to pull the shrink wrap off to investigate.

I'm just down the road. Can't stand the place though, far too much walking involved in shopping there

I'll decline your offer of the bet and instead use that 1000B to buy some new batteries :D
